I have made the decision to become real estate agent in BC. What do I need to do to get started?

Before you register for the Real Estate Trading Services Licensing Course, you should take the time to do some research on the "BC Financial Services Authority" website. You should also become familiar with the BC Financial Services Authority's Good Reputation Guidelines to make sure you qualify for a real estate license in BC.

What are the requirements to obtain a real estate license?

The BC government has several requirements to obtain your individual real estate license.

  1. You must be nineteen years of age or older and be able to show proof of Canadian citizenship, landed immigrant status, or a work permit.
  2. You must have a good reputation. This includes your general business reputation as well as your personal reputation. In addition, you must not have any criminal convictions or charges — no criminal record.
  3. You must satisfy the Language Proficiency Requirement (LPI) to be eligible to write the UBC exam.
  4. You must register at the UBC for the "Real Estate Trading Services" course. Besides your study material you will also receive 20 assignments (400 questions in total) from the UBC, which you must complete within a year.
    • You have two years from the date you register at the UBC to pass the UBC Real Estate Licensing Exam.
  5. Once you pass the UBC real estate exam, you have to complete the first 2 phases of the "Real Estate Trading Applied Course", and finally
  6. You must join a brokerage to be eligible to apply for your BC real estate license.

The details of the above steps are in the “Licensing Process” tab.
